how much

Post  bigdave on Thu Oct 08, 2009 11:56 pm

i was watching top gear in work this morning and they were doing a piece on how much they can get out of a full tank of juice..im going to have a little go at this so i filled up on the way home from work and bimbled all the way home at 2000 revs in top gear ( roughly 35-38 mph0

has any of you tried this before and how far do you think il get, il just be going to and from work this week that involves city riding with lots of stops and starts at light etc, i normally give it a wrist full off from the lights and i can tell you it was hard work to control my natural urge to go for it, i think il get about 130 miles out of a tank (without going onto reserve), i might try it on the motorway one day, im sure id get much more like this

If you guys are going to do that, I would add a bit more to your vehicle sympathy.

i would, put it in neutral at the lights.

practice your slow riding when approaching red lights, ie don't stop and gently ride slow so you don't stop using clutch and back brake for stability, and travel straight to the front, if the lines by the lights allow you to do so.

If you do have to stop, put bike in neutral, learn the length the phases so you can knock into first and still pull away in min revs against boy racers, as they will be revving, and then mis the change of phase.

When filtering, travel no more than 20mph. When filtering in town traffic, travel no more than 15mph.

Short shift into 3rd when city riding.

I'll soon get you to be advanced riders....

well ive done 119.4 miles and just gone on to the last blob on the fuel indicator, im sure like the others il get 29-30 miles out of it so im looking at about 150 miles from a full tank( not including the reserve) when i take it easy on the wrist

now it cost me 16.67 to fill up so by my reconing its 8.9p per mile

its been quite a wierd experiance going along doing 30-40 mph all the time, and with the stop start of light etc its not added much time to my ride to and from work if i time the lights right and il get 4 weeks out of a tank instead of 1

well i finally ran it dry tonight at 168.9 miles, i went on to reserve at 146.4 miles but decided to continue on till it went totally ( i took a bit of fuel in a can on the back for when it went)...not bad for 16.67 of juice

it was hard work though just traveling at just under 40mph everywere, 2000 revs in top, i was even overtaken by some bird in a micra the other night...oh the shame

How Much!

Post  Wolfman66 on Wed Nov 04, 2009 9:59 pm

That's good going and very restrained on the right twisty bit! If I have done my sums right that's 46mpg, a sterling effort. I managed 177 from a tankfull on my 650 k8, but thats 19.2l - and it wasn't dry when I bottled it and filled up!

The trick now is to see how far you get on normal 'mixed' riding, I get about 150ish if I have the odd now and again to about 17.7l. I tend to fill up when the guage starts to flash when there's 1.5l left in the tank.

Last week before I got paid I put the petrol for the lawnmower in the bike just to make sure it didn't run dry because I couldn't afford to put any in the bike!!! Now I need to fill the jerry can up, but that can wait till next year - no way am I going to cut the grass now! I need a submarine not a bloody lawnmower!

46Mpg i would hope you would get more going that slowly. When I'm using my Vectra i get 58Mpg on a long run thats keeping to the speed limits on the Motorway, set it at 80 Mph and it will do 52 Mpg thats a 1.9 TDI 130Bhp which i think is quite good for a big car even around town it will do 42Mpg which again isn't too bad
