Nail !!!!

Post  OneeyedBandit on Thu Jun 25, 2009 7:56 pm

Well it had to happen at some time.

8 years, 3 bikes and about 40,000 miles, I have got a nail in my back tyre.

Noticed it today at Dinner as the sun was glinting off the head. A quick examination and the head of the nail was less than a mm inside the tyre. Tyres have been on the bike for nearly 6000 miles and there is 3-4mm of tread left on 3/4 of the rear tyre.

Not bad considering they are Maxxis. Rode the bike home and checked the tyre when I got back. The rubber is now stretching over the head of the nail so you can just make out the nail.

Taking the bike to work again tomorrow another 120 miles and then take the bike to Tim at Motorcycle Tyre Specialists in Nottingham. For him to examine it.

He used to be a bike instructor, but set up the tyre company over 4 years ago as there wasn't a place in the centre of Nottingham that dealt with motorcycle tyres.

Still monitoring the PSI on a daily basis and this morning I had to put in 10 PSI.

Spent 40 mins this morning looking for my foot pump, found it and then hooked it up, air came out quite alot actually.

Put the foot on the lever, pressed it and the lever went straight down, and no air went in, basically the pump was broken.

Oh bugger... So I had to travel very carefully with 26 PSI in my rear tyre to ASDA. The rubber has now come off the nail head and it is now very noticeable. Still rode it to work and reached 90 in parts. Going to buy a foot pump in a bit if I can find one here where I work.

Phoned up MTS and will be popping in on Saturday to get it plugged. There is well over 2k of life left on the tyre, which is another months riding. So that will be 8.5k in total on these tyres.

I hope I don't have to pay for another set just yet.

I ran my sv for a year and a half,4000 miles plus with a nail in the back tyre. It lost about 3 or 4 psi a week. The nail was showing thru inside the carcass about 25 mm when JB changed the back tyre.

Took it to Tim at MTS today and the poor bloke was slided out with work. I had to wait until he did 2 tyre changes and a Buell wheel bearing replacement before he took my bike on.

He had another 6 people including a guy on a GSX-R of whom I thought was running on SLICKS Shocked

It cost me £35 for the work.
