Sv Tank spacers.

Post  number6 on Sat Aug 01, 2009 7:56 am

Well I've tried this tank spacer thing on the Sv.I made 2x16 mm spacers and placed them under the tank mounts at the front. While the tank was loose I removed the rubber intake from the airbox. I'm now averaging slightly over 130 miles to a tankfull of fuel as opposed to 120,ridden hard as god intended. The air intake roar is addictive!! This is with the standard filter fitted.I'll let you know what happens when I get a K&N.

Good stuff matey.

But did you check the condition of the filter before hand, as I want to try this myself, but unsure what the condition of the filter would be after.

There should be no changes to the mixture, but if he did a dyno run before and after there would be a significant gain in HP afterwards.

The Yanks reckon between 5-10hp gain just on that mod. But it does vary on the type of airfilter used.

Alot of the yanks reckon the BMC airfilter is better. I had one on the old SV.

Just to correct myself,I meant 130 to the flashing fuel light, not per tank, doh! The filter is quite mucky,2 years old come September and 8000 miles up, but I'm replacing it soon with a K&N.I'll let you know what happens.

K&N fitted and been out for a blast..You can feel the difference in acceleration straight away, and throttle response is much better. Big improvement. As for the filter getting dirty with the trumpet removed, it doesn't matter as the K&N is washable . Spray on k&n filter cleaner, let it soak into the grime, then wash under the tap before air drying overnight. Re oil and re fit when dry. Thats how I've done the one in the bandit 12 and its as good as new after 6 cleanings and 30 odd thousand miles. I'll be back to tell whether mpg improves.

136 miles to flashing fuel light, but as I said throttle response and induction noise is mucho better, lol.

Good stuff. Now you need the home made TRE mod

6.8k ohm resistor. with 5% +/- tollerance

Lift up the tank, and locate the wires that go from left to right that are coupled with 2 white suzuki connectors.

Pull them apart and take the right hand connector and let it hang over the frame.

Fold back the black outer cover and locate the pink wire. cut out a small section of the pink wire and slot on some heat shrink rubber and solder the resistor on to each end of the cut pink wires then heat up the heat shrink and reconnect the white connectors together.

Hey presto one home made TRE and more oomph. The bike will think it will be in top gear all the time, make your acceleration smoother and quicker, and your fuel last longer.

These give better performance to the SV650's than the SV1000's. Also, I've have a set of your home made spacers and some of your fairing mesh as well please.

That sounds a bit technical to me Lee,lol. I'll ask me good mate Tim to help with that one. The fairing mesh was from Newark auto jumble and I've used it all. As for spacers, mine are simply rubber pipe with ally tube pushed into the middle.

Apparently the simple resistor type tre's make tickover rough. There are some on evil bay which "switch" when in neutral to keep things smooth.Any one out there tried or tested these?

Hence why it is advised to use 6.8k, Gareth at Redcar said it is a worthwhile mod to do.

I've been following the thread for sometime on the SV Portal.
